Update on two challenges

As Sunday evening draws to a close, I wanted to post an update to the two challenges I am presently undertaking.

The Daytona 500km Challenge

I put in extra kilometers this weekend to make sure I stay on a pace to make the 500km by February 22. Here is my chart for the last 10 days:

daytonaMy wife pointed out that with 8km yesterday and 7km today, I gave myself an extra day’s worth of walking. Because I have been doing 6.0km per day, I hadn’t thought of it that way, but she is right. As you can see I am now on a pace for 504.2km, and it is rising. That is the highest it has been since December 26th.

Here is an interesting bit of math. I have learned that 3.7 miles per hour on the treadmill works out to 10 minutes per kilometer (give or take a half minute or so).

The 1,000 Extra Step Challenge

This challenge, put out there by fellow-blogger Rachael, is to walk 1,000 steps more than my average for a month. For this challenge I am only counting the steps that aren’t part of the Daytona 500km challenge. My personal target is 5,000 steps per day. Here is my current chart:

stepsAs you can see, I missed my mark on Friday. That day I was in an all-day conference at work, and never remembered to go take a walk to make up for the down time. On Saturday I was running short as well. When I got to dinner with my daughter and her friends, I was about 2,000 steps short. We were told there would be a 20 minute wait for a table, so I used that time for a brisk walk around the parking lot. The table was ready sooner than expected, but I still managed to get in about 1,200 steps. I got the rest later in the evening.

Today I was doing some chores around the house and decided to take a walk to the mail box. My wife joined me and we ended up walking about a mile total.

How are you doing on your challenges and fitness goals this month?

I'd love to read what you think. Feel free to comment. You can do so anonymously if you like, but I'd really like to know who you are if you don't mind. Thank you for reading! :)
