If you are reading this because you used to be a follower of this blog, then thank you for still being connected. I used to use this blog to track my journey toward better health. I used to come here and give a weekly update on my progress, along with my thoughts on how I was doing.
Then I stopped for a while. Then I started again with the idea that I would write every day for a year. Then I stopped again.
Stopping my blog is one thing, but I also stopped caring about my weight and my health. The last time I published here was Feb 14, 2017. Or, 1,081 days ago. That is a long time. Here is the really bad part though. Between that date and January 3 of this year, I gained 95.6 pounds. You read that right. I gained 95.6 pounds.
If you are wondering why, well there is a smart ass answer. Over the course of the last 3 years I have steadily eaten more than I burned. Isn’t that how all weight gain happens? But the real answer some may ask, is also the one I seek. I honestly don’t know. I don’t know why I went from a person who is careful about what he eats, and gets to the gym regularly, to a person who just stopped caring.
My wife and I sat the other night going through old blog posts from back around the time that I came off the rails. By Feb 14, 2017 I was already on my way, so we looked deeper. I read a lot of my writing back then. And here is the thing…it still didn’t tell me why.
Anyway, I got to the fourth quarter of 2019 and realized that I was pretty uncontrolled. I had spun way off course. The scale sat in my bathroom, unused by me, because I just didn’t want to know.
Around the first of the year I decided on an idea. I would start going to the gym a couple of times a week, then I would weigh myself. I wanted to build a slight bit of momentum. I did, and then on Jan 10 I weighed in at 341.2. I was pretty sad about that. It was only 3.2 pounds away from my heaviest recorded weight. In other words, I’d given back everything I worked for. And, that was after 3 trips to the gym, so it might have been worse on January 1.
Shortly after that I reactivated Weight Watchers. Since then I am aiming for 3 times a week at the gym, and fearlessly tracking my food. Since that day I am down 13.5 pounds. This week I lost 6.1. I am a veteran of WW, so I know that in the first few weeks the weight comes off pretty fast. I also know it will settle into 1 to 2 pounds per week soon, and I am ok with that.
So, I am back. I don’t know for how long, but for today here I am. I plan to write some here, because I think it helps. I am going to try to get to the “why” of it all, while also just dealing with the facts.
thank you for reading.
PS. I will update my progress page at some point. Stay tuned for that.
