workout

Checked that one off the list!

I didn’t make a post to the blog yesterday. I worked a normal day, but when I got home I packed a bag and WENT TO THE GYM! And yes, for those of you wondering, I got out of the car and went inside. I actually had a work out yesterday.

This was an item on my goals for the week, to get to the gym and have at least one workout. I am happy to say that I have actually doubled my goal, because I went again today.

I am not setting the world afire with my workouts, but I am there and getting some exercise. Here are my two workouts so far:

Day 1

  • 15 minutes on stationary bike at resistance level 9
  • 5 minutes walking backward on the treadmill at 1MPH
  • 3 sets of 15 reps with a leg press at 100 pounds
  • 20 minutes going forward on the treadmill. Incline of 3%, 2.5 MPH

Day 2

  • 15 minutes on stationary bike at resistance level 9
  • 5 minutes walking backward on the treadmill at 1MPH
  • A total of 25 curls at 50 pounds (two sets of 10, one set of 5)
  • 30 reps of presses at 60 pounds (3 sets of 10)
  • 20 minutes going forward on the treadmill. Incline of 3%, 2.5 MPH

As I am sitting here writing this I can feel the effects of the upper body work today. I am sure I will feel it even more tomorrow. Yesterday, after the first workout, my knees hurt. I came home and iced them for 20 minutes. Today I have no knee pain, so that is a step in the right direction.

I know from past experience that a workout goes better with music, so last night I assembled a workout playlist on Spotify. Yesterday I had some general music on shuffle, and that worked well. Today was better with the up tempo music.

So, I have done it! I have overcome the fear and excuses and made two trips to the gym. I used the time immediately after work, but before dinner. I frequently have early morning meetings, so a workout at that time is impractical. My intent is to go three times a week. Each of the workouts above took about 45 minutes, including cool down time and moving between machines.

I have more to say about the experience of being inside the gym again, but I will leave that for another day. For today I am enjoying the mild euphoria of knowing I broke through and got out there!
