My first Zumba!

I have this friend on Facebook. We met in a group on weight loss, and she lives not far from me. She has been suggesting Zumba to me for a couple of months now. Previously a woman I work with was also suggesting it to me. That was a year or more ago. I resisted and resisted and resisted….until Wednesday night.

If you don’t know about Zumba, it is the latest, dance-based fitness craze. I am sure that the purists of Zumba will give me a list of reasons why it is different, but to me it looks like Jazzercise without big hair and leg warmers.

The class I went to was at a skating rink. I would estimate between 75 and 100 people were there. If there were 100 people, then 97 of them were women. One instructor was a man, and there were only two men in the class that I saw, and I was one of them!

I took up a spot toward the back, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. When the lights went down, the music came on and we rocked it out. I don’t think I recognized a single song (man am I out of touch), but that didn’t stop me. I bounced, twerked, squatted, spun and stepped as best I could with everyone. I didn’t know the moves, and spent a lot of time studying the monitor and the experienced people around me to get a hint.  I wanted to say that I mostly didn’t know what to do with my arms, but that would imply that I knew what to do with my feet, which would be an over sell.

I spent the hour uncomfortable and a little self conscious. But I loved it. I enjoyed the energy of the music, and the challenge of learning the moves. A few I am developing names for in my head. My favorite name so far is the dandelion picker. I’ll let your imaginations work on that one.

There are classes nearly every day, at all hours. I don’t see myself going that often, but I do see it becoming at least a once per week change up to my routine.
